The California Agriculture Leadership Foundations’ Class 42 departed for our national seminar today. The day started early with half the class leaving from LAX and the other half from SFO. Excitement was in the air as we left the west coast and headed for our Nation’s Capital. With no hiccup in travel, the class members, foundation staff and core faculty met up at the Marriott in Crystal City. Once settled, we enjoyed a quick dinner and discussed the week’s eventful agenda. Grateful for the opportunities that lie ahead, anticipation rose as we pondered our first day in D.C. Tomorrow’s activities include: a briefing and tour of the Pentagon, a trip to Arlington National Cemetery, a visit with Supreme Court Justice Breyer, and a discussion about leadership with Congressman Devin Nunes (Class 29) and other Ag Leadership alumni. We’ll conclude the day with a moonlight monument tour accompanied by other program alumni. What a day we have ahead of us!
We were able to apply some of the leadership lessons we’ve learned thus far in the Ag Leadership program. Early preparation helped the Presiding Fellows organize the group while traveling today. As we coordinated our travels into new territory we asked ourselves “What are we missing?” We were also reminded of the power of communication as traveling with a big group requires many moving parts; the day would not have gone as smoothly as it did without a vision, a plan, and effective communication.
All and all, spirits were high and the mood was light which has been a developing theme in Class 42’s culture since day 1.
